Vogelspinnen sind die größten Spinnen weltweit, sie erreichen verschiedenen Größen von nur 10mm Körperlänge bei Cyriocosmus Arten bis zu 120mm bei Theraphosa Arten.
Ihr Lebensraum reicht von Buschlandschaften, Wäldern, Steppen, Halbwüsten, und Wiesen bis zu menschlichen Siedlungen.
Bisher sind über 900 Arten in 116 Gattungen beschrieben.
Durch eine große Farbenvielfalt von Braun bei Aphonopelma chalcodes und Citharischius crawshayi über Schwarz bei Grammostola pulchra und Pamphobeteus antinous bis Farbenprächtig bei Avicularia versicolor und Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens sind Vogelspinnen beliebte Terrarientiere geworden.
